Ingredients

For the Bread
  • 4 slices Sourdough/White/Whole Wheat Bread Provides structure and texture; toasts beautifully.
  • 2 tablespoons Butter Softened; olive oil works as a lighter alternative.
For the Sauce and Cheese
  • 1 cup Marinara Pizza Sauce Opt for homemade or high-quality store-bought.
  • 1 cup Shredded Mozzarella Cheese Try provolone, cheddar, or gouda for a twist.
  • 1/4 cup Grated Parmesan Cheese A sprinkle of Pecorino Romano elevates the taste.
For the Toppings
  • 1/2 cup Turkey Pepperoni Substitute with veggies for a vegetarian option.
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder Fresh garlic can provide a more robust taste.
  • 1 teaspoon Italian Seasoning Alternatively, use individual herbs like oregano and basil.
  • 1/4 cup Fresh Basil Optional; feel free to omit if not available.

Equipment

  • non-stick skillet

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Spread a thin layer of softened butter on one side of each slice of bread. Sprinkle garlic powder and Italian seasoning over the buttered sides.
  2. Lay two slices of bread with the buttered side facing down. Spoon marinara on the unbuttered side, add mozzarella and your choice of toppings, then place the remaining slices of bread on top, buttered sides facing outward.
  3. Heat a non-stick skillet over medium-low heat. Cook the sandwiches for about 3-4 minutes per side, until golden-brown and the cheese is melted.
  4. Remove from skillet, let cool a minute, then slice in half. Garnish with fresh basil and serve with additional marinara sauce for dipping.
