  • 8 ounces Whole Milk Mozzarella Cheese Can substitute with low-fat or vegan cheese.
  • 1 pound Italian Sausage Can use ground turkey for a leaner option.
  • 1 large Caramelized Onions Can replace with sautéed bell peppers.
  • to taste Kosher Salt and Pepper Use sea salt and freshly ground pepper.
  • 1 cup Fresh Basil Optional, can substitute with oregano.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C).
  2. Allow the pizza dough to rest at room temperature for 15-20 minutes.
  3. Cook the Italian sausage in a medium skillet over medium heat for 5-7 minutes until browned.
  4. Caramelize onions in the same skillet with a little olive oil for 10-15 minutes over medium-low heat.
  5. Generously coat a 12-inch cast iron skillet with olive oil and preheat on medium heat.
  6. Press the pizza dough into the bottom and up the sides of the skillet, spread pizza sauce, cheese, sausage, and onions.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and crust is golden-brown.
  8. Cool for 5 minutes, then optionally sprinkle basil before serving.
