  • 1 can black beans canned, drained and rinsed
  • 1/4 cup sunflower seeds or walnuts/cashews
  • 1/2 cup oats gluten-free
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce or tamari for gluten-free
  • 2 cloves garlic fresh
  • 1/2 cup onion chopped
  • 2 tablespoons chia seeds for chia eggs
For the Seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes to taste
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
For Cooking and Serving
  • 2 tablespoons oil for frying high-heat oil like avocado or canola
  • 4 pieces burger buns gluten-free if necessary
  • fresh veggies like lettuce, tomatoes, etc.

Method
 

Step-by-Step Instructions for Vegan Black Bean Burgers
  1. Combine 2 tablespoons of chia seeds with 6 tablespoons of water in a small bowl. Stir and let sit for about 5 minutes.
  2. Open a can of black beans, drain thoroughly, rinse under cold water, and pat dry.
  3. In a food processor, add 1/2 cup of oats and 1/4 cup of sunflower seeds. Pulse until crumb-like consistency.
  4. Add black beans, chia egg, tomato paste, soy sauce, garlic, onion, and spices to the processor. Pulse until just combined.
  5. Scoop mixture and form into 4 equal patties, about 3/4-inch thick.
  6. Heat oil in a skillet. Cook patties for 12-15 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden brown.
  7. Assemble burgers in buns and top with veggies and cheese. Enjoy!
