Step-by-Step Instructions
- Activate the Yeast: In a large mixing bowl, combine 2¼ teaspoons of active dry yeast, 1 cup of warm water, and a pinch of sugar or honey. Stir gently and let sit for 5 to 10 minutes until frothy.
- Mix the Dough: Add 2 tablespoons of sugar or honey, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil to the yeast mixture. Gradually incorporate 3 cups of all-purpose flour.
- Add More Flour: Start adding additional flour, about ½ cup at a time, mixing until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl, up to 4 cups total.
- Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface or keep in the mixing bowl, then knead for about 4 to 5 minutes with a mixer or 5 to 8 minutes by hand.
- Let It Rise: Place the kneaded dough into a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for about 1.5 hours or until doubled in size.
- Shape the Loaves: Punch down the dough gently, divide in half, shape into logs, and place into greased bread pans. Cover and let rise for another 45 minutes.
- Preheat and Bake: Preheat oven to 350°F. Bake the loaves for 30 to 33 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Cool and Enjoy: Remove loaves, brush with melted butter, and cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes before slicing.
