Ingredients

For the Dough
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour A good quality flour provides the structure needed for perfect bread.
  • 1 cup warm water Aim for 100–110°F for optimum results.
  • 2.25 teaspoons active dry yeast The leavening agent; one packet is about 2¼ teaspoons.
  • 1 teaspoon salt Enhances flavor and strengthens gluten; use fine salt for better mixing.
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil Adds moisture and richness; substitute with melted butter if desired.
For the Filling
  • 4 cloves garlic Minced; this key ingredient gives your bread its essential flavor.
  • 0.5 cups fresh herbs Chopped, primarily parsley and thyme for a fresh, vibrant taste.
  • 1 cup shredded cheese A mix of mozzarella and sharp cheddar gives the best results.

Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Baking Sheet
  • Oven
  • Kitchen towel
  • Parchment paper

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Begin by dissolving the active dry yeast in 1 cup of warm water, ensuring the water temperature is around 100–110°F. Allow this mixture to sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes foamy and bubbly.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine 3 cups of all-purpose flour and 1 teaspoon of fine salt, stirring them together. Add the yeast mixture and 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Mix until a sticky dough forms, then knead it on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth.
  3. Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover and let it rise for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  4. Punch the dough down, roll it out into a rectangle, and evenly spread the minced garlic, chopped herbs, and shredded cheese over the surface.
  5. Roll the dough into a tight log, slice it down the middle, and twist the halves together to create a braid.
  6. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  7. Transfer the twisted loaf onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the top lightly with olive oil and bake for 20-30 minutes until golden brown.
